A day after Everett Withers declared his intent to accept a position with the New York Giants instead of becoming the FIU defensive coordinator, head coach Butch Davis announced the addition of three coaching staff members.

On Wednesday, Feb. 27, Davis publicized the promotions of Kenard Lang and Bryn Renner along with the addition of Damione Lewis.

Renner, who was the team’s recruiting coordinator, will hold the cornerbacks coaching position while Lang will assume the defensive line coaching job for the Panthers.

During his three seasons as the Panthers’ recruiting coordinator, the former North Carolina quarterback under Davis, hauled in Conference USA’s No. 5 class in 2017, No. 1 class in 2018 and No. 7 class in 2019.

Lang takes over for former defensive line coach Kenny Holmes after serving as a defensive analyst for FIU in 2018. Holmes was relieved of his duties at the begin of the offseason.

Lewis will become the assistant athletic director of football and player development.

Both Lewis and Lang previously played under Davis while he coached at the University of Miami.

The former first-round picks will bring more than 10 years of professional experience each to the coaching staff.

After being drafted with the 17th overall pick in the 1997 draft by the Washington Redskins (1997-2001), Lang spent tenures with the Cleveland Browns (2002-2005) and the Denver Broncos (2006).

For Lewis, the St. Louis Rams selected him with the 12th overall in the 2001 draft where he played as a solid defensive lineman for the team for five seasons. Lewis also spent time on the Carolina Panthers (2006-2009), the New England Patriots (2010) and the Houston Texans (2010).
