Former FIU guard Marcus Burwell has announced his intent to transfer to Virginia Union University via Twitter on Wednesday, Jan. 30.
After spending the beginning of the season with the Panthers, Burwell decided to step away from the team and pursue opportunities closer to his hometown of Richmond, Va.
“I will be attending Virginia Union University next season,” Burwell said in his Twitter post. “It was in my heart, and I wanted to do it for my city.”
The six-foot-three junior was the first signee of Jeremy Ballard’s inaugural recruiting class this past year and averaged 17.6 minutes, 6.3 points, 2.5 assists and 2.2 rebounds during his 13-game stint.
FIU’s game against Charlotte on Jan. 10 was Burwell’s final game with the program. Since his departure, the Panthers have posted an even 3-3 record.
Burwell came into FIU following his time at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Co. where he led the team with 19.7 points and four assists-per-game.
